It is no secret that most of the fashion events in history have been highly centered in the European region. So many of the high-fashion labels are derived from Europe which explains that. The NYFW is a great experience because it shines the limelight on American fashion designers and that is actually a relatively new experience for them. The NYFW primarily focuses on American designers and fashion houses. Even the press week largely benefited American magazines like Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar.

First Press Week

Press Week is a segment in the fashion week wherein the press is allowed to interview and cover the various designers, models, and representatives of the fashion labels. The first-ever Press Week was actually at the Plaza Hotel in New York. That time only involved fifty-three designers so it was a small gathering. These events later evolved into something bigger and grander through the years as the fashion labels strived to outdo one another. The scope of the event became wider and multiple shows are even held simultaneously. That resulted in the press becoming scattered and covering these events by themselves instead of an actual convention.

Ralph Lauren is yet another prominent name in the world of fashion. It is such a major name in the industry but it actually has very humble roots. Its first appearance in the NYFW was in 1972 during the fall season. The company only had ten models and about fifteen editors. The models were walking one by one as the designer was talking about each piece. It was a very intimate and short show but it definitely did the job for the company.

NYFW Beginnings

The first New York Fashion Week actually occurred in 1993. This was possible thanks to the Executive Director of the Council of Fashion Designers in America. His name is Fern Mallis and he is responsible that the event came to fruition. The first-ever fashion show is actually themed “7th on Sixth.” As of this year, the NYFW is officially twenty-six years old. It is now a biannual event that they hold up to this day.

Identity Crisis

Like many other things, this event is currently facing hiccups. One of the biggest issues is the fact that the fall season clothes get advertising nine months earlier than the season for retail buying. There is a mismatch between the advertisement period and the selling period. Another issue is the fact that there are so many major fashion brands that are relocating to new cities. Big names like Rebecca Minkoff and Tommy Hilfiger have already relocated to the city of Los Angeles.
